Diabetes Facts or Fiction on Herbs?

Diabetes facts or fiction on herbs? My extensive research has shown herbs to be more facts. True, they have a variety of uses but herbal medicine is one of them. This makes use of seeds, flowers, roots, root bark and inner bark. We have had a few of them in the previous pages. Here are more:

Garlic This has shown to lower, not only blood sugar but also cholesterol and blood pressure. Researchers have found diabetes facts that serum insulin has increased and glycogen storage has improved after the administration of garlic.

Gentian root has been used to make the pancreas stronger and to tone down the kidneys and spleen.

German sarsaparilla is used in the prevention of diabetes. Hopefully, the sarsaparilla found in the Cracker Barrel Restaurants are of the same variety.

Ginkgo biloba is used in the prevention and treatment of diabetic neuropathy and may also be helpful in reducing the retinal damage caused by macular degeneration. The oldest living tree species, it is believed that it stimulates the blood flow and so may lessen the numbness and spasm in the limbs.

Ginseng This has been known to have the qualities that help lower the blood sugar levels. Diabetes facts show that Siberian ginseng has been proven to have the ability to make the blood sugar normal. Panax ginseng is another matter. While it is true that it has the ability to lower the blood sugar level, those with high blood sugar should not use it. Bottom line? Ginseng can normalize blood sugar level from either high or low level.

Goat’s rue This may have a mild endocrine stimulation but to some people the lowering of their blood sugar level has been dramatic.

Goldenseal This has been known as having a hypoglycemic effect and has been used since the time of the settlers when they learned some diabetes facts from the American Indians.

Gotu kola This has the ability to stimulate circulation in the body. Clinical studies have confirmed this as one of the diabetes facts and better circulation of course distributes more nutrients to the different tissues in the body especially when they’re in short supply. And this brings us to the fact that in a hypoglycemic episode, there is a short supply of glucose.

Green tea The recommendation is two cups a day for the treatment of diabetes. Green tea has been linked to the decrease of total cholesterol levels excluding triglycerides or HDL cholesterol.

Guar gum Diabetes facts have shown this to affect the gastrointestinal passage and in so doing, may have an effect on hypoglycemic action. It may be useful in the treatment of non-insulin dependent diabetes because it lessens post-prandial glucose and insulin levels. This has been found in both healthy and diabetic clients. It appears that these effects are more prominent when fiber is dispensed with the glucose of food. Also when proteins and fats are not properly managed in the diabetic diet, guar has only a slight effect on post-prandial glucose.

Gymnea sylvestre This is effective in both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. Taking 200 milligrams of this extract twice a day has shown to improve blood sugar control. Diabetes facts have shown that that the leaves of this plant have been used to manage diabetes for hundreds of years. The Journal of Ethnopharmacology published a report on two studies that showed this common plant in Africa and India to have a blood sugar lowering effect. Also, the Journal of Veterinary Medical Science reported on the result of a study that revealed the ability of gymnema to slow down the absorption of glucose in the intestine.
