Here’s a study that involved basically healthy middle-aged people who drank 1 ½ cups of grape juice every day for 9 weeks. What the study found was that when these people drank Concord 1 ½ cups of grape juice everyday for nine weeks, they were found to have higher cells that fight infection.
The grape juice drinkers had considerably more T cells than their control group who did not have the grape juice. These T cells are white blood cells that are infection-fighters. The study found the grape juice drinkers increased their specialized T cells levels.
These specialized T cells are also called "surveillance" cells. Mostly they are found in the intestines, lungs and gastrointestinal tract. These serve as the first line of defence when the pathogens come. In addition, when they notice the trouble, they rouse the other immune cells for reinforcements to help protect the body.
There are also four foods that help improve one’s protection against disease. We might as well eat these or as in the case of one of them, drink it. What are they, you asked? They are yogurt, oranges, pumpkin seeds and tea. They have been recommended by no other than Mehmet Oz, MD and Michael Roizen, MD.
Let’s see how each one of them helps protect our body from illness. Yogurt, the unpasteurized kind, has Lactobacillus acidophilus. This is a healthy bacterium that helps stop infections that are fungus-related. If you don’t like yogurt, take 20-milligram of acidophilus supplement two times a day.
Oranges have a lot of vitamin C. This vitamin has antioxidant that helps ward off invaders that cause disease to the body. Bell peppers, cantaloupe, broccoli and strawberries are also rich in vitamin C. If you can’t eat these, taking 400 milligrams of vitamin C supplements three times a day can do the work.
Pumpkin seeds contain zinc which has been found to reduce the number of days you have the common cold. Tea has lots of flavonoids which help reduce the aging of the immune system. Other foods that have flavonoids are onions, broccoli, apples, oats, berries and tomatoes.
