Diabetes treatment? There have been a lot of studies regarding the treatment of diabetes. One says that diabetes is nothing but more or less a form of dyspepsia consisting of a difficulty in absorbing sugar and so just like other forms of dyspepsia, it can be modified and provoked by associated conditions. Phew! That’s a mouthful isn’t it? Let’s see if I can make it simpler.
Still others say it’s due to a faulty function of the stomach. Then the researchers say it’s the liver’s fault. What has this got to do with us? Let’s stop this blaming game and go down to the nitty gritty of this all. Bottom line? We like the diabetes treatment, the treatment that works!
The thing is the only way we can go through the diabetes treatment is through vigilant control of blood glucose. And how can we achieve this? Well, from large research studies, we gather that the following are keys to accomplishing this objective:
SMBG or Self monitoring of blood glucose
Keep an ideal body weight
Education
Exercise
Medication
Diet
Attitude
Let’s take the above one at a time. First is the frequent self-monitoring of blood glucose. How often should you do this? Ideally, this should be done four times a day, before each meal and before bedtime. The procedure is simple so it can be done at home, at work and at school. Our experience though is this. Once we achieved our blood glucose target, we went down to testing our blood sugar only once a week. This is something we can look forward to in our diabetes treatment regimen.
Why is it important to know your blood sugar? This is the only way you can make correction to adjust it. For example, if your blood sugar is too low, you may want to omit the next dose of medication or reduce the insulin you take, but run this with your doctor at first. Or you may have to eat some sugar or drink orange juice to correct the situation. You see that we are active participants in this diabetes treatment.
Now if the blood sugar is too high, you may need a shot of insulin. You should also test your blood sugar when you feel that it is not in control. But whatever you, before adjusting your medication, you should always have a talk with your doctor. Remember that Type 2 diabetics do not have to test their blood sugar as often as the Type 1 diabetics.
Now let’s move on to keeping an ideal weight. Find out from a chart what is your ideal weight and try to keep that weight. Now don’t go overboard and try to lose all the pounds in one go. This does not work. Just remember, we gain weight when we eat more calories than we spend. An inactive lifestyle could be the cause of being overweight. So what are you waiting for? Keep walking.
One of the major roles in the diabetes treatment is education from both sides. A member of your health care team will review all aspects that have a bearing to diabetes and give you recommendations as to the frequency of your SMBG and lifestyle. You, on the other hand, have to accept the suggestions and educate yourself further and put them into action. So you see, it’s a two-way process; one can’t go on without the other.
Cure for Diabetes? Could we find a cure for juvenile diabetes? (different from type 2 adult diabetes). Health problems from raised blood sugar, insulin deficiency, nerve damage, blindness and so on. Here's a video from Dr. Dixon who will explain more.
Newsalert!
A study was announced by Diamyd Medical that will consist of around 300 patients at 30 to 50 clinics in Europe. For now about three to five countries will participate but more are expected to join. The subject of the study is the therapeutic diabetes vaccine called Diamyd.
Last December, 2007 FDA also received an application to carry out the Phase III study. Diamyd Medical is a life science company that develops therapy for diabetes and its complications. They have developed this drug called Diamyd for autoimmune diabetes. The result of the Phase II clinical trials was so encouraging that they are now on track for the Phase III clinical trials.
It would be great if the vaccine for diabetes came true. Let us hope and pray and since it has already passed the Phase I and II clinical trials, the end is near that the vaccine will become a reality. It will be my dream come true.
